This morning at 9:30 am, the journey to explore and learn
had begun for 23 campers at Shinjuku Bus terminal. Their destination, Achimura
Namiai, is a small rural town in the countryside of Nagano. From today, they
will begin their 28 day adventure into nature to experience and learn a side of
life that has been forgotten in the modern years through technology. As they
all gathered, we all immediately started to introduce and create new friendships
as we all introduced our background from various countries all over the world. They
all immediately learned the necessity of reliance on one another and helped
each other out carrying each others luggage for those who needed help and
collected trash as a team from the lunch obento that was eaten in the bus.
Though it was a long four-hour bus ride, it was also a moment necessary for
everyone to sit down and talk to one another. After arriving at the camp site, they
all sat and listened to the few rules that has been set beforehand to be
enacted at the camp. And for the other rules, they will be established over
time as each camper learns the necessity to set them to live together for the
month to come. Then the campers all sat in a circle and stood up to introduce our
name, age and background. They then engaged in some ice-breakers that involved
teamwork in order to play and as a result, the campers were able to build a
bond between one another. After the campers learned about one another thoroughly,
they were assigned to separate rooms in groups of threes and fours. The people
in each room will not only be living in the same room for the coming weeks but
also used in further activities to come. Now separated into different groups,
they were introduced to this year’s presentation topic which is “Natural
Catastrophes”. A project aimed to not only understand what the natural catastrophes
are, but on top of that a means to survive under these conditions, and the
harsh reality and impact it gives on the lives of the survivors who are robbed
of everything in life. Each room was given the task to name their groups after
a certain type of natural catastrophe as a mean to start pondering about the
topic that was announced today. After completing the long day of today, the
campers were relieved to eat dinner and take a moment to take in everything
they learned in order to adapt to the new environment they are under. The
campers were very helpful and understanding today and were well engaged with
one another to make new friends. Although some were shy in the beginning, after
given some time they all opened up after making new friends. From tomorrow they
will begin their full day at this camp and live together as a team of friends
for the days to come.
